Mission

The Healthy Kent Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Coalition (PMAD) exists to improve the emotional health and well-being of pregnant and post-partum mothers and their families through advocacy, education, outreach, and support.

Who We Are

The Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Coalition is a consortium of the Healthy Kent Infant Health Action Team. Its purpose is to improve a mother’s mental health to ensure long-term health and success for themselves and their children and families. The Coalition is made up of healthcare providers, therapists specializing in PMAD, mothers impacting by PMAD, public health, non-profit service agencies and reps. from all three local hospitals who meet monthly to develop educational events and materials to reach pregnant and postpartum mothers, up to one year after birth. It is a networking group that collaborates to meet the needs amongst coalition members and community partners.

What We Do

  • Build awareness in the community of the importance of screening mothers for PMADs during pregnancy and one year after baby is born and to provide assistance in seeking help.
  • Develop a community-wide network of agencies to provide direct and indirect services to pregnant and postpartum women and their families.
  • Coordinate group support meetings and networks that enable women to interact with other women experiencing PMAD.
  • Provide professional development/educational events on topics of interest to providers working with women and their families.

History

The PMAD Coalition was formed in 2007 to bring attention to maternal mental health conditions, PMADs. It is the #1 complication of pregnancy and approximately 20% of women experience depression during the perinatal period. Our goal is to increase the number of women screened for postpartum depression, in the hospital and community settings, and get them the appropriate treatment and support.

The PMAD Coalition established the Michigan Chapter of Postpartum Support International, where PMAD Coalition Co-Chairs served as first year President and Secretary.
